Five Unusual Restaurants Around the World

Going out to eat is one of life’s great pleasures, whether it’s a special celebratory meal or a midweek treat when you’re too tired to cook. Many of us have favourite restaurants or chains that can be found locally, but what happens if you want to have a once in a lifetime experience?

There are many weird and wonderful restaurants around the world, from underwater delights to a restaurant in a treehouse, so if you want some inspiration, see below for five of our favourite unique restaurants across the world.

Bird’s Nest Restaurant, Thailand

Diners to this restaurant sit in specially constructed ‘bird’s nest’ pods nestled amongst the trees, 16 feet above ground. As well as enjoying spectacular views, diners’ food and drink is delivered by waiters using a specially designed zipline.

Ithaa Restaurant, Maldives

Fans of the ocean can experience dining under the sea in this restaurant built 16 feet below sea level. The exclusive dining area only seats 14 people at a time, and diners can experience stunning views of fish swimming overhead through the glass ceiling and walls.

Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant, Kenya

As you’ve probably guessed, this restaurant is set inside a series of caves which are lit by the soft glow of hundreds of candles. The caves are actually formed from old coral reef and are estimated to be between 120,000 and 180,00 years old. The owners have aimed to keep the cave as natural as possible, and the only modernisations can be found in the kitchen and bathrooms.

El Diablo, Lanzarote

Chefs at El Diablo use heat generated by the island’s active volcano to cook food over a volcanic hole in the ground. A giant grill rests six feet above the bubbling lava, which maintains an average temperature of 400 degrees celsius! It might sound dangerous, but the volcano has been peacefully dormant since 1824.

The Labassin Waterfall Restaurant, Philippines

This outdoor restaurant is frequently found on lists of places you must visit in your lifetime, and it’s easy to see why. Diners eat on bamboo tables and soak their feet in the clear pool made by the enormous waterfall just behind. Food on offer includes local seafood and the waterfall itself even acts a as natural air conditioner to keep diners cool.
